When FreeAgent is free
FreeAgent is free for as long as you keep a business current account with NatWest, Royal Bank of Scotland or Ulster Bank. With Mettle, you also have to make at least one transaction a month. You get one free FreeAgent account per business bank account, and the free version covers landlords too.
Software is only one reason to choose a bank account. Don’t switch banks for free software without comparing the accounts themselves. We don’t earn anything from links to banks.
Can FreeAgent send quarterly updates and the tax return?
Yes. FreeAgent says you can send each quarterly update to HMRC with one click and file your final declaration directly. We found no “coming soon” label on either.
FreeAgent MTD for landlords
FreeAgent has a separate landlord account for people who own property in their own name. It handles jointly owned property, with ownership shares set for each property, and each owner can file from the one account.
It has two limits:
- No overseas property. FreeAgent says it is still looking into whether it can support foreign property income.
- Separate accounts for rent and self-employment. You need a sole trader account and a landlord account. FreeAgent offers 10% off the second one.
