About MTD HQ

MTD HQ is an independent, plain-English guide to Making Tax Digital for Income Tax. It’s written for landlords and sole traders who’d rather understand the rules themselves than read software sales pages or guidance meant for accountants.

From April 2026, people with self-employment or property income over £50,000 had to start keeping digital records and sending quarterly updates to HMRC. The threshold drops to £30,000 in April 2027 and £20,000 in April 2028, so millions more people are affected. Most of the information online is written by companies selling software. We wanted something simpler and more neutral.

What you’ll find here

  • Free tools, starting with our “Do I need MTD?” checker
  • Guides for specific situations: one rental property, jointly owned property, rent plus self-employment, taxi drivers and more
  • Honest software comparisons, including free options

Who runs MTD HQ

I’m Matthew, based in Greater Manchester. I’m not an accountant. I started MTD HQ because the rules affect so many people and the official guidance is hard to follow. I research every page carefully against HMRC’s guidance and link to the sources so you can check for yourself.

How we keep it accurate

  • Every key fact links to GOV.UK, HMRC’s manuals or the Low Incomes Tax Reform Group (LITRG).
  • Every guide shows the date it was last checked.
  • When HMRC changes something, we update the affected pages.
  • Spotted a mistake? Tell us and we’ll fix it quickly.

Important

MTD HQ is independent and not affiliated with HMRC. Our pages give general information, not tax advice. For advice about your own situation, speak to a qualified accountant or tax adviser. Read our full disclaimer.

How we’re funded

Some links are affiliate links. If you sign up to software through them, we may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. It never decides what we recommend. Read our affiliate disclosure.
